Bob -
Last week was a rough week. Lots of work. Went to New York for a day to visit a camp where my dad went as a boy and share some memories of that time. His grandparents ran the camp and he spent lots of summers there, especially the years his dad was overseas during WW11. Dad has Alzheimer's, so those memories and others are fading quickly. I have memories of the stories he told of the camp. At one time it was beautiful and pristine, but 60 years does things to change everything. It was run down. It was cluttered. It looked like it would take a huge effort to get it back into shape. Sort of like us. If we let ourselves go, it takes a long, long time to get it back together. Every day that goes by, it gets harder. That is why I have become sort of obsessed with doing some sort of exercise every day. I know how hard it is to get to a certain point and how easy it is to slide back. Like Genghis Khan said, "you can't go home again." It was in his book of the same name. You Can't Go Home Again. Years later, Thomas Wolfe claimed to have written it, but we all know better. The problem was that Genghis killed everybody in his home town, and then when he came back, he found they were all still dead and things weren't the way he remembered when they were still alive. So, he was a bit sad about that. But Genghis knew that running and lifting weights helped relieve stress and depression, so he started the first Run for the Lopped Off Head 5k. It started at a post with a severed head and ended at another. It sounds brutal, but you have to remember that it was like 100 years ago or so and times were different. People were not so shocked by a bodiless head. The last 5k I was at that I saw a head really bothered me, because I am not used to that, but I ran fast. Really fast. I skipped the post run award ceremony, though. Too much is too much. At any rate, the thing is, we need to keep up our exercise, no matter what. It is like putting money in the bank. At least a little every day can add up to a lot over time. The point is that I still ran a fair amount this week. I have more to say about that, but my time is limited this morning. In conclusion, you have to continually do upkeep and maintenance to avoid sliding into disrepair and if you are going to steal Genghis Khan's book, it always good to wait until he is dead.
Bob, as always I enjoy your post. I really thought it was going to be too serious, but then you changed the pace and it was exactly what I expected. Thank you. Oh, and I will see you around 4 for steps
ReplyDeleteI know at times that I get too serious with my history lessons. I try to put some learning into these posts. The fact that Ghengis Khan was a runner is not widely known. Good job on the steps today. You were ripping up them and ripping them up. Your legs will thank you in your next half marathon.
